The revelations of spying on telephone customers are extraordinary — but it gets even worse. The government is spying, in real time, on rank-and-file Internet users. From the Guardian:

The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian.

The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called PRISM, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.

CLick here to call for investigation of this massive surveillance overreach: http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/nsa_internet/?referring_akid=.627301.vfHO4N&source=taf

Let’s put it plainly: It has been conclusively demonstrated that the government is spying on millions of Americans, without meaningful oversight, and without the assent of the very people — all of us — whom our government is supposed to represent.

Click here to call for an investigation and hold the federal government accountable: http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/nsa_internet/?referring_akid=.627301.vfHO4N&source=taf

The top secret document obtained by the Guardian also lists Microsoft, Yahoo, YouTube, Skype, and AOL as providers of user data to the NSA’s PRISM program.

Those who have defended the government’s enhanced cyber serveillance powers in the past argued that the NSA would have to get the consent of internet companies to obtain electronic communications — but PRISM totally circumvents that, by giving the NSA direct access to the companies’ servers!

Click here to condemn this enormous violation of our rights and demand an investigation: http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/nsa_internet/?referring_akid=.627301.vfHO4N&source=taf

All this effectively means anything we do on the internet can be (and has been) monitored by the federal government.

We must not lie down as the NSA and the federal government eviscerate our privacy rights, invading and surveilling our every move.

Click here to join the fight: http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/nsa_internet/?referring_akid=.627301.vfHO4N&source=taf

Photo

Spy state shock [?]: Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Facebook, Skype, AOL, Apple all secretly sharing private user communications with NSA

Spy state shock [?]: Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Facebook, Skype, AOL, Apple all secretly sharing private user communications with NSA:
You’re only shocked if you haven’t been paying attention.
The integrity of natural lands in the U.S. are in jeopardy. Severe droughts, raging wildfires and other extreme weather events enhanced by climate change are wreaking havoc on America’s most beautiful places. On top of this, many of these lands are being targeted for oil and gas drilling—the very activity that drives climate change. Under President Obama, the pace of drilling on public lands is double that of protecting public lands.

The Obama administration recently unveiled its plans for the Energy Security Trust, a federal plan to speed up the permitting process for oil and gas drilling on public lands and send the royalties from these activities to a trust fund for clean technology advancements, including electric vehicles. It was met with applause from the petroleum industry, who was eager to get the go-ahead from President Obama on increased domestic drilling.

Though a successful democracy by many standards, Turkey has more journalists in jail than any other country. Through financial penalties and legal intimidation, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have ensured that Turkish news networks either have a pro-AKP slant or censure themselves entirely.

Describing the United States as an “advanced Third World country,” longtime consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader calls for a new mass movement to challenge the power corporations have in Washington. “It is not too extreme to call our system of government now ‘American Fascism.’ It’s the control of government by big business, which Franklin Delano Roosevelt defined in 1938 as fascism,” Nader says. “We have the lowest minimum wage in the Western world. We have the greatest amount of consumer debt. We have the highest child poverty, the highest adult poverty, huge underemployment, a crumbling public works — but huge multi-billionaires and hugely profitable corporations.”

As Republicans move to cut billions of dollars in funding for food stamps, a new report finds one in six Americans live in a household that cannot afford adequate food. In “Nourishing Change: Fulfilling the Right to Food in the United States,” the International Human Rights Clinic at New York University’s School of Law reports that of these 50 million people going hungry, nearly 17 million are children.

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is redesigning the Gmail inbox to ease some of the frustration of sorting through emails on the desktop and on mobile devices.

Denise Aday’s insight:

This hasn’t rolled out in my own Gmail account yet, but I’ll be watching for it and assessing the delivery impact for things coming from mailing lists. Priority Inbox users already get some automatic filtering. This new feature appears to create smart lists (tabs), and make setting up certain filters (which I use) unnecessary. Something to keep an eye on.
